The Berghain resident will issue his first full-length on Ostgut Ton this summer.
Answer Code Request will release his debut album on Ostgut Ton in June.
The German producer, real name Patrick Gräser, says he “imagined my audience listening to this album on a road trip,” adding: “I hope with this approach it will still sound fresh in 10 or 20 years’ time.”
Most of the tracks on Code are revised versions of material produced one to two years ago, though there are a few brand new cuts too. It’ll arrive four months on from the Breathe EP, Gräser’s first appearance on Ostgut Ton. In recent years he’s been welcomed in to Berghain’s tight-knit crew of residents alongside the likes of Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann and Marcel Fengler.
RA’s Jordan Rothlein got in touch with Gräser this week to discuss the record in a bit more detail:
How did the album project come about, and long has it been in the works?
I had produced a lot of tracks and they just needed a place to go. I seized the opportunity to bring them out when Ostgut gave me the chance. This is my debut album and I am honoured to be part of a great organisation and crew. Most of the tracks for the album were completed about one to two years ago, with the others finished late last year. I assembled and made reworks of the earlier tracks prior sending them over to Ostgut.
Even within the context of EPs, you’ve displayed a great deal of variety in your production style. Will we see even more sides of Answer Code Request on the album?
The album gives me more space to expand my musical direction and challenge expectations of hearing a standard “4/4 beat” dance floor track. There is a track with vocals by Elizabeth Bernholz—that’s a project I look forward to working on more.
You’ve been taking in techno in Berlin since the ‘90s, and are now a resident at one of its biggest clubs. How has the city’s electronic music scene informed your sound, and the sound of the record?
Berlin inspires me in all kinds of different ways. Growing up as a teenager in the ’90s led me towards many musical influences: they descended from the different moods that I found myself in. There isn’t one particular style that I am after, though I have to say that the ’90s play a large part as far as influences on the album go.
You were producing for a number of years under your own name before introducing the Answer Code Request moniker. Do you make a distinction between the music you’ve released under the two names?
Yes, my productions under my real name were rather, how should I say, not very experienced. Back then I got the feeling that I had not found my style. But now with ACR as my moniker, I can throw all my ideas into my production and remain diverse and open to everything.
The launch party will go down at Berghain on June 7th, with Answer Code Request and more acts TBA.
